I took a second 2003 trip to Vegas on October 24-29. This time, I
met up with my sister Monica and brother-in-law Derek, who had never
been out there before. We planned the trip a few months ago, and
found out later that my new niece/nephew would also be going with us
in utero. Despite the fact that Monica was about halfway through her
pregnancy, we mananged to have a good time staying at the Tropicana
and checking things out.
Monica and Derek got to town a day before me, and managed to rent a
car and drive out to the Hoover Dam for the day before checking in to
the hotel. I got there the next night, and here's a list of the
things we managed to do:
- Hit the buffet at Excalibur, and marvelled at the people eating
there.
- Went to a 3-D IMAX movie at the Luxor called something like The
Haunted Castle; the technology was cool, and there were some good
effects, but the movie was largely horrible, and reminded me of a
too-long cutscene from a video game.
- While waiting for the IMAX movie, we spent some time in a video
arcade playing various cool stuff.
- Went to the Secret Garden, the Siegfred and Roy tiger and lion
exhibit. The felines were all sleeping, but the dolphins were pretty
lively.
- Went to the Madame Tussauds wax museum at the Venetian and took
lots of pictures of each other hanging off of the various exhibits.
- Wandered the Venetian and tried out everything at the Brookstone
store.
- Went to the Star Trek experience at the Hilton; me and Derek rode
the ride, all of us got our pictures taken on the bridge, and Monican
and Derek bought a bunch of stuff in the gift shop.
- Ate at Bennihana, the Japanese steakhouse.
- Ate at the Tropicana's buffet for breakfast, which was horrid.
- Shopped the forum shoppes at Caesar's, including the gigantic FAO Schwartz
- Had a great lunch at Spago.
- Saw Blue Man Group at Luxor (5th row, center section, with ponchos)
After Monica and Derek left on Monday afternoon, here are a few of the
things I did by myself:
- Rode a Segway
- Saw Scary Movie 3 (bad, but only $5.75)
- Went to a test screening of the new Charlie Sheen show at CBS
