The Failure Cascade

The Failure Cascade is a collection of thirty-four short pieces by Jon Konrath, ranging from super-short flash fiction to longer stories that stretch past the 3,000-4,000 word mark. It follows the same absurdist and gonzo path as Ranch: The Musical, but at roughly twice the length and with more room to wander through its stranger corners.

The book also marks a bit of a turn away from the hyper-compressed chaos of Konrath’s 2010s work. It still lives in the same nonlinear, post-apocalyptic, pop-culture-damaged territory, but the title story starts to pull at what comes after that decade of absurdist persona-building and where the writing might go next.

The collection came together during 2020, after a much larger work-in-progress became the wrong book for the moment. Instead, these pieces were gathered into a shorter, sharper volume shaped by the unease of that year.
